Meet the Team: Kernel Equity Leadership
Peter Marcum – Founding Partner
Peter’s career runs through several decades of technology and infrastructure building. He started with JML Computers and Nashville Computer Liquidators, creating businesses that solved practical needs in hardware and systems. Later, he co-founded WV Fiber, which grew into a major regional internet provider before its sale. After that, Peter expanded DevDigital into one of Nashville’s most established development firms, managing hundreds of projects across healthcare, education, and entertainment.
Kernel Equity reflects the next step in that path. By combining capital with development resources, Peter built a model that reduces the cost and risk for early ventures while giving them access to experienced operators.
Don Kennedy – Partner & CEO
Don carries the CEO role at Kernel and sets the firm’s direction day to day. His background spans business management and operational oversight, giving him the perspective needed to balance growth with discipline. At Kernel, Don focuses on aligning each portfolio company’s strategy with clear execution. He also manages the bridge between founders and Kernel’s shared resources, making sure development, finance, and strategy work together instead of pulling in different directions.
His role is as much about coaching as it is about leadership. Don works closely with founders to set priorities, build sustainable practices, and avoid the common traps that drain startups in their early years.
Debby Sapp – Partner & CFO
Debby anchors the financial side of Kernel. Her expertise is in accounting discipline, reporting clarity, and compliance areas that often lag in young companies. She makes sure budgets are accurate, financial records are maintained, and companies understand their runway in real terms.
Beyond oversight, Debby helps founders see how financial choices connect to long-term outcomes. By holding both Kernel and its portfolio ventures to a high standard, she ensures resources are used responsibly without cutting off flexibility when it matters most.
